There must be a lot of hurting legs from all that playful pulling.
The first question I would ask is at what point is it silly? a finn dinghy has 109 sq feet of sail area, about ten square meters.
the rules for the class call for all up weight of about 350 lbs (160 kg).
the finn as an olympic class was quite high performance and was clocked at 24 kts reaching.
if you are racing in 3-5 kts all the time and seldom get real breeze, it would seem that making the board bigger would make more sense than making the sail bigger. in fact i have an excellent version of that philosophy on the rack in my yard. it is 380 cm, has a sweet carbon dagger board (to make that big sail drive upwind), carries any size tuttle fin, has a slippery sliding mast track for ultimate trim, hiking straps in the right places, and it probably never saw a sail larger than 7.8 before it was retired. all up it weighs 26 lbs. and you never get your ankles wet.
i think the next effort and lift of consciousness for racing in light wind is to make the already very big sails acceptably lighter and likewise the rig parts. this will go a long way to make sailing with them more fun.
i know all that long board talk is a bit off the formula track, but isn’t it more appropriate to develop what is most fun in your area, rather than try to adapt to what may work best somewhere else. the northeast US is a good example. if you like to sail standing up (and i consider this the primary distinction in under 8 kts), then a long board with a dagger board will give you more of that. or you can switch to sitting down. SAILING IS STILL THE IMPORTANT PART.
i don’t know if this answers your question about the fifteen meter sails. it’s early in the morning and i don’t want to think about rebuilding the loft so we could build a thing like that.

Svårigheten kommer nog att bli att göra master och bommar som är tillräckligt styva för att få det att funka.

Det är nog lite hemligt skulle jag tro. Det är ju Scott Fenton själv som
nämner det på the Team bulletinen. Om Formula skall bli OS gren så måste
det till ordentligt stora segel. Men man skall inte oroa sig, det som är
stort idag är litet imorgon, själv ser jag fram emot 25kvm.

Tuesday in Sylt saw a change of weather …for the worse.
The day dawned foggy and still and remained that way throughout the day.
There was no chance of running any competition. However there is optimism for Thursday as a possible weather system may produce enough wind and waves to start the competition.Sailor conversation today turned to the potential of the Olympic Games format being changed from IMCO to Formula windsurfing for the next Olympics. It seems the consensus of opinion among professionals here is that windsurfing is well overdue to show its real potential in the Olympic Games with Formula.
How the Formula format would deal with 3 to 5 knots like we saw some races in Sydney is yet to be determined. Rumors are circulating that Gaastra has already started developing a 15 square meter sail for sub 8 knot Formula racing; fueling further speculation that PWA will move over to Formula windsurfing format as early as 2002.
Those notably cited as saying they would be Olympic starters in 2004 should the format be changed to Formula are; 12 time World champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck as well as Gaastras own Kevin Pritchard. With only one person allowed to represent each country other team members Scott Fenton and Phil McGain would also be possible starters should they be selected by their respective countries.
Winning an Olympic Gold Medal for ones country, is one of the great goals in any sportspersons career. However it is a privilege that has so far been unavailable to top professional windsurfers due to the vast difference of format.
A change to Formula for 2004 will most likely change all that.

Kevin: ”Gaastra are looking at 15.0 metre race sails. The boards are able to carry that size and it will only increase the wind range of competition. Part of the future development is being able to get back out and have a good time. Formula is opening up the wind range for everyone and will continue to provide equipment for recreational and pro sailors to get out and enjoy sailing in a wide range of conditions without a low number of sails and boards.”
