From July 17th to July 25th Sotavento Beach in the south of the island has been speedsailor’s universe. With strong offshore winds and flat water this region provides perfekt conditions to break the current world record of 46.24 knots (85,64 km/h).
It came down to a fight of David against Goliath as amateurs entered the professional competition. Through daily qualifications amateurs qualified to compete against the worlds best professional sailors.
44 men and two ladies have been registered to fight for the prize money of 25.000 EUR.
Each Elimination was hold on a course of 500 meter length, all competitors had a time window of 90 minutes to surf this distance as fast as possible.
With five victories in seven eliminations Bjoern Dunkerbeck (sailnumber: E-11) from Spain (best speed: 42,53 knots) is the winner of the Windsurfing World Speed Challenge.
Placed in second position is frenchman Jose Bahadour (best speed: 41,74 knots).
Finian Maynard, the current world record owner, is placed at third position (best speed: 41,37 knots).
Dave White finished 3rd in one heat on his brandnew F2 production speed board MISSILE and finally managed to get 5th placce.
Karin Jaggi (sailnumber: Z-14, best speed: 33,33) from Switzerland wins the womens competiton.
