iväg till Rhodos denna vecka…Publicerad av _dave på 9 augusti, 2010 vid 15:22Heading out on Thursday evening for a week, staying in the north west. Anyone heading that way or recently been there? Aiming to do some kiting in the north but considering a short escape to the famous southern tip is the north does not work out. Hey, I came back from Rhodes a couple of weeks ago, we stayed 2 weeks in Kremasti to the northwest. There’s a kitecenter by the beach, run by the angriest kiter I’ve ever met hehe 🙂 I guess a firm hand is needed though, the place is like the wild wild west with german newbies all over the place! Still a great place however; nice water temperature, consistent winds and clear skies! Anyways, a trip to the south is definately worth it, Prasonisi is a superb place if you know what you’re doing! Pretty crowded but absolutely flat water due to off-shore winds on the south (I think) side of the beach. On the other side the wind is on-shore which means the water is a bit choppy, big surprise 🙂 Have fun! /Fredrik

I guess this thread is a bit useless for you now since you’ve already left but it might be useful for other users so I’ll write here anyway.
I just came back from Rhodes / Kremasti, stayed for a week and did a beginners course at the kite center ”Air Riders Rhodes” (http://www.kiteprocenter.gr/).
What Frippe just said is totally true, I have to agree that it’s run by some of the angriest kiters I’ve seen, the manager is a bit mental and it doesn’t take much to upset him (try crashing one of his precious kites once or twice and he’ll be furious haha). The kite center in general is pretty nice though with a water hose, some chairs in the shade, music and people to help you launch/land and rescue service with a jet ski. It costs 50€ / week to use their facilities.Anyhow, the beach is filled with stones so bring your wetsuit boots. It seems like the wind conditions are pretty stable during the windy season (summer), 6 out of my 7 days there had enough wind for kiting. Usually there’s a cross shore wind going north. The kite area is pretty narrow with a beach area on either side and the guys at the center don’t like if you leave the kite area so make sure you stay within the buoys. The land area around the kite center is pretty empty but there’s at least one super market quite close by.
There aren’t that many hotels close to the kite center and the buses don’t run that often (or on schedule for that matter) so rent a car/motorbike if you live far off.

Here is how it went. Info might be useful for others. Had kiteable wind every day. Launched mostly at a random spot near my hotel in Ixia. Very sketchy launch – tricky to find room in the water for a safe launch and land. Landed the kite to the leash in the shallows once I had found a sufficiently quiet spot. Good wind once away from the shore. I also taxi’s down to the Kite pro center at Kremasti. Nice clean wind all the way to the beach. But what a zoo. Kites crashing on the beach every few minutes by some semi-hotshot. I experienced mr grumpy but generally the people running the place seem to be working hard launching and landing people. I just rode upwind of the crowd. I also hired a car and spent a day at Prasonisi. I can understand why people like the spot. Yes, if you are just on a kite holiday you would probably stay here, although I don’t know how you cope with the heat in a tent in August. But it’s not so suitable for a family holiday (it is in the middle of nowhere). The spit of land between the little island and the mainland gives offshore wind and flat water on one side and chop/small waves on the other. But in mid august this place is very crowded. I found the flat water area to be totally overcrowded and I gave up after two tacks. Just too many kites and windsurfers. I spent the day on the choppy side with a 9m kite (most had between 6 and 9). I counted 30 kites and 50 windurfers on the water at the same time, not to mention loads of swimmers (!) so it was also a bit busy for my taste, but again it is easy to ride upwind of the crowd and there were still a few swells to play with. Overall a wind-safe place but crowded in August. I have heard that the wind is reliable in Prasonisi already in early May and it should be much less crowded.
