On a regular day Kanaha would be covered with over 100 windurfers, but Saturday saw only a few packs moving across the water around bouys. It was the Hawaii State Slalom finals and it was a typical Kanaha day, 15-20knots N.E trades.
With state titles up for grabs racing was close and intense. In the mens 50 age group we saw Tom Cherry using his nitro 5 6.3 take his 11th State title in a row. Mike Yasik using his 6.6 took a convincing win in the mens 40. Connor Baxter took the junior division beating kids 3 years older than him.
In the coverted Mens Pro division Phil McGain was on his A game and took 4 bullets in the morning races from Alex Aguera and Jimmy Diaz in third. Highlights from the mornings races was McGain showing blistering speed on the straights and setting up to control the pack in the jibes, with a few times McGain taking it easy on the starts but moving quickly through the pack to take another win.
In the afternoon in the Mens Open division, it was on again with Aguera and Diaz wanting to dethrone the flying Aussie. Diaz was looking good in the first final, but was called over early after finishing ahead of McGain who took the win from Jimmy’s little indiscretion. In the next heat Diaz got the hole shot at the start and was able to lead the whole race to win ahead of McGain with Aguera in third.
In the third heat of the Mens pro a bizarre situation was witnessed, an individual recalled flag was flying right after the start, McGain turned around and saw the flag and realized he was over and also his main competition Jimmy Diaz was over because Jimmy was in front of McGain at the starting signal. McGain jibed back half way across the first leg and headed back to the start to clear himself. Aguera and Diaz continued on the race but after they crossed the finish line the announcer told them they were overearly, so it was McGain who after sailing the course correctly was awarded first place. This must have been the move of the year, but very well calculated!
In the final heat Diaz had to win and McGain disqualified to give any chance of Diaz winning the title. But McGain took it easy on the start and followed Aguera and Diaz into the first mark. McGain was now in touch but not under any pressure. On the second to last leg, McGain saw his opportunity to take Diaz who was in second. McGain put the hammer down and drove over the top of Diaz just before heading into the last jibe. After the jibe Aguera had slowed down in a light patch of wind and McGain then took him on the outside with a super clean jibe. McGain went on to win the final heat and stamp his domination on the day.
