World Record for longest distance travelled by a Kitesurfer in 24 hours
…
Hi everyone,
Eric Gramond has managed to set the World Record for longest distance travelled by a Kitesurfer in 24 hours. Some of you already know the story of the down-winder there last year where Eric and his friend covered a distance of more than 1000km in only 15 days.
For guys with a Paragliding background this type of challenge echoes the adventures of pilots who are self-sufficient for many days as they go cross-country and bivouac in the remotest of places. Adding to the isolation Eric was alone in Brazil with only the elements of beach and sea as companions. Armed with his 9m Edge II, board and a rucksack with the all-important GPS etc, Eric launched from the beach of Fortaleza at 5:15pm prepared to be guided by the light of his head torch.
His goal to top 500km would mean averaging over 20km per hour. With favourable wind conditions forecast nature conspired otherwise. Starting off well in the dying hours of the day, as the darkness descended the wind dropped and clouds obscured the moonlight leaving Eric attempting to fly by the light of his head torch out on the open ocean. During the night the wind was up and down. Kite dropping out of the sky he was forced to swim back to the beach twice taking more than 30min each time. At one point pulled out in offshore conditions with wind too light to re-launch the kite he battled to stay in sight of the few dwindling lights on the shore knowing this time he was too exhausted to swim back and his only hope of rescue would be to hang on to the kite! Luckily the gods smiled, at dawn the wind switched direction and force, propelling him onwards on his journey along the coast. Now came the realization that his harness in continual movement around his waist and legs was chaffing his skin leaving bloody sores (and what waterman is comfortable with the prospect of being out in open water trailing blood?). Finally after 24h he had achieved a distance of 419km setting the record others will now surely aspire to chase.
Try to imagine the stamina necessary to be out kiting for 24h let alone the balls required to face the unknown of the open ocean at night without any chance of rescue. When at last you land back on the beach the pounding endured by your mind and body is far out weighed by pride being the first to cross a unique frontier!
Check out the full story in the upcoming Kiteboarding magazines all around the world.
