Hi mate, I totally understand how you feel, but there are two sides to every story. First off, I totally side with you in that the IKO thing is a bit over the top. In all honesty I think its a bit silly that they insist everyone should have an IKO cert to hire gear abroad etc etc when thats actually not true. I have spoken to a number of centers that hire out gear and have asked what the story is when it comes to the older riders that learned to kite before the IKO was all commercial and stuff. They told me that regardless of a cert or not, one of their staff will come out and check that you know how the gear works and then let you go out. So its no big deal from that side.
On the flipside the IKO thing is a quality seal. It gives you credibility when offering courses, unless you can back that up with a reputation on the beach of providing safe lessons with good course content. It inadvertently makes it easier for you to get customers by restricting everyone else and their mate showing up on the beach and doing kitelessons just because they want to have their dream job with no experience at all.
Cost – well, nobody likes an expense, but try to think of it as google adwords, flags, or anything else that adds value to your business. Drop the guys at IKO a mail, be honest with them that you have been lazy with the admin work but you have done the students, back it up with links to your webpage etc and let them know you want to continue with the IKO standard. I am pretty sure they will help you out as much as they can : )
On the flipside, you always have the KSA!, speak to Eric Fernholm or Falle in Varberg and they can hook you up with coursedates and more info : )
Take it easy dude, dont stress, and remember that you dont need to be a bitch to the system if you are good at what you do!
